Peter S. Kim, Ph.D. joined 5AM Ventures in 2014 as a Venture Partner. He serves as the Virginia & D.K. Ludwig Professor of Biochemistry at Stanford University School of Medicine and is a member of Stanford ChEM-H, a new interdisciplinary Institute at Stanford University. He serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the Council of the National Academy of Sciences. Well-known for discovering how proteins cause viral membranes to fuse with cells, he has designed compounds to stop membrane fusion by the AIDS virus and pioneered efforts to develop an HIV vaccine. Dr. Kim was President of Merck Research Laboratories (2003- 2013) when Merck gained approval for more than 20 new medicines and vaccines, including JANUVIA, GARDASIL, ISENTRESS and ZOSTAVAX. Previously, Dr. Kim was Professor of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Member of the Whitehead Institute and Investigator at the HHMI. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1997, is also a member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine), the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Kim received his A.B. in Chemistry from Cornell University and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Stanford University. Dr. Kim is based in the San Francisco, CA office.
